Which West Midlands Grant Fits Your Business, and What Match Funding Really Means | APX Digital
Which West Midlands grant fits your business, and what match funding really means
As of 16 September 2026, three routes are worth knowing if you run an SME in the West Midlands. Made Smarter West Midlands covers manufacturing and engineering firms, with up to 50% match funding and a maximum grant of £20,000. The Business Energy Advice Service starts with a free energy assessment, then offers up to 50% match-funded grants. The West Midlands SME Grant Programme funds wider projects, but it runs in council-administered rounds, so the window opens and closes.
Three words decide whether any of them will help you: grant, match and loan. They are not the same thing, and confusing them is how projects stall halfway through.
Grant, match and loan are three different things
| What it is | Who carries the risk | West Midlands example | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Grant | Cash toward costs the funder has approved. Not repaid. | Funder decides, and awards are capped and competitive | A West Midlands SME Grant Programme award of £5,000 to £100,000 toward a capital or digital project |
| Match funding | The share you fund yourself. A "50% match" means the grant covers half and you cover the rest. | You, up front, out of your own cash | Made Smarter West Midlands: up to 50% match, maximum grant £20,000 |
| Loan | Borrowed money, repaid with interest, no restriction on what it buys | You, plus the interest | Not a grant, but a loan, overdraft or company funds can count as your match |
Two consequences follow. The grant is usually a smaller number than people expect, and the money arrives after you have spent yours.
Made Smarter West Midlands: manufacturing and engineering
Made Smarter West Midlands launched in 2021 for manufacturing and engineering SMEs. The West Midlands Growth Company leads it with WMG at the University of Warwick and the Manufacturing Technology Centre, on behalf of the West Midlands Combined Authority.
- Funding: up to 50% match funding, maximum £20,000, for digital technology equipment and/or specialist advice to implement a project.
- A specialist who knows your sector: six specialists cover the region, and each produces a tailored digital roadmap before anything is bought.
- Free training: Leading Change, developed with Coventry University, up to 30 hours including 12.5 hours face to face.
- A funded digital intern: a 12-week placement, which is how several West Midlands firms started their first project.
If you make or engineer something in the region, read this scheme first. Our breakdown of the £20,000 cap and the arrears catch is here.
Business Energy Advice Service: when the bill is the problem
BEAS is the one for energy costs eating your margin. A free on-site assessment comes first, then up to 50% match-funded grants toward what the report recommends. The grants are not repaid. It funds practical measures such as solar panels, refrigeration, insulation, waste and recycling equipment, ventilation, boiler or heat pump replacement, and LED lighting with controls.
Eligibility is specific, so check it against your bill before spending an afternoon:
- Fewer than 250 employees and turnover under £42 million, or a balance sheet total under £36 million.
- Minimum energy use of 25,000 kWh a year.
- Energy spend above 6% of turnover, or more than 500,000 kWh used a year.
- Trading at least 12 months, business premises rather than a home address, in the West Midlands Combined Authority area: Birmingham, Solihull, Sandwell, Dudley, Walsall, Wolverhampton or Coventry.
Budget the time honestly. BEAS publishes its own typical timings: a couple of days to be contacted, about a month to arrange the assessment, two to three months for the initial report, then up to three months for the grant application. Energy-intensive applications can run to six months. After a BEAS grant you wait 12 months before reapplying.
West Midlands SME Grant Programme: the one that runs in rounds
WMGP is UK Shared Prosperity Fund money administered by your local council, so the rules differ by council area and applications open and close in numbered rounds. Round 17 ran in July 2024, with round 18 opening days later. Check your council's current round before planning a project around it.
| Detail | |
|---|---|
| Start-ups | Grants of £2,500 to £7,500, for businesses trading under 12 months in Birmingham, Cannock Chase and Solihull |
| Existing SMEs | Grants of £5,000 to £100,000, Birmingham, Cannock Chase, Solihull and Shropshire |
| Typical award | Most applications are expected in the £10,000 to £20,000 band; the £100,000 end is exceptional |
| Eligible projects | Capital investment, digital projects, new market development, innovation, expansion, premises capacity |
| Not eligible | Training and skills development, plus running costs including rent, rates, internal wages and accountancy fees |
| Terms | Grant capped at 50% of eligible cost, paid in arrears once you evidence the spend, with at least three competitive quotes per item from businesses unconnected to yours |
One more number applies across the board. Under subsidy control, a business can receive up to £315,000 of Small Amounts of Financial Assistance over any rolling three financial years, and where the business is part of a group the limit applies to the group.
Which one fits you
- You manufacture or engineer something. Made Smarter West Midlands. Up to £20,000 at a 50% match, and the roadmap comes before the purchase.
- Your energy bill is a top-five cost. BEAS. Free assessment first, match funding on what it identifies.
- You need capital, a system or a new market, and you have cash to put alongside it. WMGP, in the next round your council opens.
- Two or three of those are true. Pick the largest eligible project and sequence the rest, because match cannot come from other public funding.
The parts that catch people out
Arrears. Every scheme here pays after you have spent. A £20,000 project with a £10,000 grant still needs £20,000 of cashflow before any money comes back.
Match rules. Match cannot come from other public sector funding or from asset finance. Loans, overdrafts, savings and company funds can, and they must be in place before approval rather than promised for later.
Quotes and paperwork. WMGP wants three competitive quotes per item from businesses not connected to you or your directors. Budgets get written backwards from what is quotable, which is easier if the project was scoped as work packages.
What we do at APX
We scope the project, cost it as work packages, write the technical and budget sections of the bid, and then build the system. We are Birmingham based, we work with manufacturers and engineers across the West Midlands, and we will tell you plainly whether a scheme fits before we propose anything.
The starting point is a 30-minute Digital and Funding Check, at no cost and no obligation. We look at where the admin and the missed work sit, flag which schemes might fit, and say straight away if it is not a fit. Email Info@apxdigital.io or call 07753 226214.
Scheme details verified against madesmarter.uk, businessgrowthwestmidlands.org.uk and council guidance published by Birmingham City Council and the Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire Growth Hub, accessed 16 September 2026. Funding levels, eligibility and round windows change, and every award is the funder's decision. We did not find a live WMGP round window for September 2026 and have not claimed one.
