Rented Lead-Gen Sites at Zero Build Cost: How One-Business-Per-Area Works | APX Digital
Rented lead-gen sites at zero build cost: how one-business-per-area works, and who it's wrong for
The pitch sounds too easy: we build a lead-generation site for your trade in your area, you pay no build cost, and enquiries land on your phone. It is a rental, and it suits some trades better than others. This post puts the whole model on the table, including the parts that argue against it.
The shape of the deal
APX's rented lead-gen site is £150 to £250 per month with a £497 setup fee (price card, verified 3 September 2026; the range covers site size and how much content work the niche needs). There is no five- or six-figure build. You are renting a site that APX owns, maintains and keeps ranking; the setup fee covers the initial build, the domain, and getting the tracking wired.
The mechanics, from a live build in the folder (measured 3 September 2026): the site is a location-page network, one page per town a trade actually serves, each templated around a real data layer of postcodes, councils and funding routes (the full anatomy is in our teardown of an EPC lead-gen town page). Every page funnels into an eligibility calculator rather than a contact form, because the calculator tells you who's worth calling (why that works). Leads are routed to the client by email and phone the moment they submit, with no "we'll pass it on".
One business per area is the exclusivity rule: if you rent the plumber site for Wolverhampton, we don't sell Wolverhampton to a second plumber. The site exists solely to rank Wolverhampton plumbers' queries and hand them to you. Exclusivity is what the rent buys: a rented site with shared leads is a directory.
Who it's right for
- Trades with healthy job values where one extra job a fortnight pays the rent. Retrofit, boilers, drainage, roofing, full bathroom fits; someone paying £180/month needs one job every two months to break even, and most of these trades clear that bar easily.
- Businesses whose owner answers the phone within the hour. Speed-to-lead is the whole conversion story here.
- Firms that want enquiries without learning SEO, without ad accounts, without touching a website.
Who it's wrong for: read this part twice
- You want to own the asset. This is a rental. The domain, the site and its rankings belong to the model, not to you. If your plan is "rent for two years then take the traffic", wrong product; buy a website instead (from £550 for a smaller site project, £45/month support, same price card) and build equity in it yourself.
- You can't handle speed. Missed calls on rented leads are wasted rent. If your intake is an overflowing shared inbox, fix that first.
- Your area can't support the rent. A town of 12,000 people doesn't generate enough searches for a £150 to £250/month site to earn its keep. We won't build where the maths doesn't close, and you should distrust anyone who does.
- Compliance-heavy niches where a third party can't speak for you. Some regulated work needs the firm named, qualified and insured on every claim a page makes; a networked rented site is the wrong vehicle.
- You expect leads without qualifying them. Rented leads are enquiries, not contracts. The calculator pre-qualifies, but somebody still has to ring, price, and lose some.
The commitment terms are boring on purpose: cancel with 30 days' written notice, 14-day invoices. It's meant to be a utility bill you can hand back, not a marriage.
Rented site vs bought site vs Google Ads
| Rented lead-gen site | Bought website | Ad spend | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront | £497 setup | £550 to £1,997 build | n/a |
| Monthly | £150 to £250 | £45+ support | Whatever you bid |
| You own the asset | No | Yes | No |
| Leads stop if you cancel | Yes | Gradually (organic holds) | Immediately |
| Work required by you | Answer the phone | Maintain + market it | Manage campaigns |
A bought site compounds: you own the rankings and can fire the agency. A rented site is a service contract for outcomes, and the rent never stops.
The model works because exclusivity plus a calculator plus genuinely local pages produces enquiries a tradesperson would otherwise pay marketplaces to share. It fails, honestly, when the buyer wants ownership, can't answer fast, or sits in an area too small to carry the rent. If you're not sure which you are, ask; we'd rather turn down a bad fit than collect three months of rent and a cancellation.
