Template site vs bespoke build: what £550 and £1,997 actually buy a UK small business

The question we get most is why our quote is four times the other one. Usually one quote is a template deployment and the other is a bespoke build, and nobody told the client which is which. This is the honest breakdown, with our own published prices (£550 and £1,997 are the real figures from our price card, not an invented range) and an admission at the end about when the cheap one is the right one.

First: "template" and "bespoke" are cost categories, not quality tiers

A template site is a pre-built product configured to your brand. A bespoke build is designed and engineered around what your business actually needs. Neither is secretly bad, but they solve different problems, and the difference compounds after launch, not before it.

For scale, SpotDev's 2026 UK pricing guide puts DIY website-builder subscriptions at roughly £100 to £300 a year, freelancer brochure sites at £500 to £4,000, and small-agency standard sites at £2,500 to £10,000 (spotdev.co.uk, accessed 3 September 2026). Our bookable range sits deliberately inside that market: our smaller site project from £550 (£45/month support) and Diamond at £1,997 (£150/month support).

What £550 buys (our smaller site project)

This is the "done properly, not done endlessly" tier. A template deployment in the best sense: a proven structure, your content and imagery placed with intent, the essentials we refuse to skip.

What you are not buying: custom functionality, an information architecture designed around your sales process, or someone owning your performance targets. If your business is "people should be able to find us and ring us", £550 is honest and sufficient.

What £1,997 buys (Diamond)

Diamond is where the build starts from a blank page. The BLOC Architecture rebuild (documented before/after here) is this shape of work: multi-route site, per-scheme project pages with downloadable materials schedules, positioning written around how customers actually search ("Residential Architects UK"), GA4 tracking, and an image system where every asset has a deliberate weight and delivery size.

Concretely, the difference at delivery looks like:

That last row is a process difference that matters more than it sounds: we replace dev/staging links with a recorded walkthrough at handover, so you see the finished site explained rather than clicking around a half-finished URL.

The maths nobody puts on the quote

A £100 to £300/year builder subscription becomes expensive the month you need something it can't do: a per-project page, a lead form that routes intelligently, a Core Web Vitals problem your host won't touch. A template site costs little until you need something it can't do, at which point you rebuild. A bespoke build costs more once and then takes small edits. A £3,000 quote including twelve months of support routinely beats a £2,000 quote that bills every change, and the same logic applies one tier down.

When we'd take the £550

Take the template route if you are a sole trader with clear content and no funnels or differentiation problem. It also suits businesses validating a brand before investing, and anyone whose template site only needs to exist while something else drives enquiries. We'd rather down-sell a Diamond pitch than sell a build that waits for a business to grow into it. And if you're on the fence, the deciding question is whether your site has to do something: rank for a competitive term, present a portfolio, route leads. "Be findable" is a £550 job. "Sell like the business does" is a design-and-engineer job.
